Description

Sewing pattern for a simple pair of 18th C. stays (jumps / bodies) to be made from linen or leather. Not every woman could afford to buy a fully boned pair of stays. Simple leather or linen stays were a cheap and comfortable alternative. This style is easy to make, with front and / or back lacing and light boning. Perfect for work, undress or a first pair of stays. Comes with instructions to cut from leather or linen!

Sizes 8 (= Bust 81 cm / 32 1/2″), 10 (85 cm = 34″), 12 (90 cm = 36″), 14 (95 cm = 38″), 16 (100 cm = 40″) or 18 (105 cm = 42″). One size per pack.

Frances Wheatley, The Sailor’s Return, Detail (1786). Stays could function as outer wear for working women and within the confines of your own home.

Saint-Elmer Gautier, Femme vêtue d’un corps, aus: Ernest Leoty, Le corset à travers les âges (1893). This picture shows simple 18th C. stays with front and back lacing worn over chemise and petticoat. Note the placement of eyelets for spiral lacing.
